Do please note that you cannot change any information on your application after it has been submitted. Also, and I cannot emphasize this enough, when an application becomes complete in our system has no impact on the decision. What does matter is that all application information is submitted by the deadline. It is normal for us NOT to have all applications completed for up to three weeks past the deadline.   We manually review each application for completion and this takes time. Do not panic if you log in after you have submitted your application and see that it is not marked as complete.   The Committee does not start to meet until three weeks after the deadline and there are reading rounds so to speak.   By this I mean that not all readers read at the same time and thus not all applications need to be ready at the same time.   Thus if your application is not complete until well after the deadline this is not something to be concerned about. When your application is complete you will receive an email from us letting you know.   If there is an issue with your application that needs to be addressed we will contact you. Now on to the visuals . . . #1 :   You Are Working On Your Application But Have Not Submitted It Let us start with what you see when you log in to the application system while your application is in progress and has not been submitted.   This is what you will see when you log in.   Note that next to Submission Status it says Not Submitted (at the end of the red arrow).   In this example, the applicant has also entered the names of the three recommenders and they are displayed, along with the status. #2:   You Have Submitted Your Application Now lets move on to when you submit your application.   When you log into your application after it has been submitted the main page will show the message Submission Status: Submitted (see arrow #1). You will also notice in this example that one letter of recommendation has been submitted (see arrow #2). At this point no documents will show up.   Do not worry, this is because we have not printed your application yet. #3:   We Print Your Application This Does Not Typically Happen The Same Day You Submit The next step that will occur is that we will print your application for review.   Do understand that it can take up to 15 days for us to print your application after it has been submitted.   Please do not panic if your application has not been printed. The important thing is not when your application is printed, the important thing is that your application is submitted by the deadline. If you look at this next picture you will notice two changes from the picture above.   First, the status has changed to Application Printed Manual Review of All Information Submitted In Progress (see the red arrow #1). Second, arrow #2 shows that we have not marked your application as complete because we have not finished our manual review.   We need to make sure we can read your transcripts for example. Third, you will notice that transcripts, test scores, and other supporting documents now appear (see red arrow #3).   Please note that the default status for the following documents, if you uploaded a document, at the time your application is printed is Received Official Academic Resume International Fellows Program Essay Personal Statement Standard/CV Resume We find that the vast majority of our applicants submit documents that are legible and complete so the default status is Received Official. Do note that in some cases there are issues with these documents and if so, we will contact you. Special Note: the IFP statement is not mandatory and if you did not submit an IFP statement it might not appear, or if it does appear it could read Not Applicable, Not Received, or Waived. Above the Other Supporting Documents section you will see test scores.   Please note that the default status for the test scores at the time your application is printed is Not Received even if you entered the scores.   This is the same for transcripts the status after we print will read Not Received. After we manually review your application this information will be tracked.   If there is an issue we will contact you. Please do not panic at the message Not Received even if you self reported your scores and uploaded your transcripts this is normal. We find that some applicants will not enter all of the information so we will perform a manual check to make sure we have all of the information we need.   Also remember that we do not look for official test reports until after admission offers are made WE ONLY USE SELF REPORTED SCORES to make admission decisions so please do not contact us at this point in time to see if we have your official scores on file. In the above example the native language of the applicant is English so TOEFL is marked Not Applicable.   If this were an applicant that speaks English as a second language this will read Not Received. The last comment for this example is, please ignore the message on the bottom near arrow #4 that says Submission Status: Not Submitted.   That references a part of the application we no longer use but it is hard coded into the system it means nothing. #4:   Complete All Documents Tracked But Not Sent to Committee This next picture shows that we have everything we need.   All the letters are submitted and we accept unofficial transcripts and self reported test scores for admission review.   However the status shows Incomplete and above that you will notice is still says Manual Review of All Information Submitted in Progress. A final sign off must be made before the file gets sent off to the Committee and this one is just waiting. #5:   Complete . . . But with a Question This next shot shows you the message Documents still pending Application is Under Review with the Application Status below that reads Complete. This is a case where we have everything we need, however there may be an issue we feel we need to resolve before the file is sent to the Committee.   There is no need for you to contact us if you are in this status.   If there is a question we need to ask you, we will contact you. #6:   Complete Sent to Committee! This final shot is when you know your application has been sent to Committee.   You will also receive an email from us when your file is complete in case you do not want to compulsively log into the system to keep checking =) You can see on the top that it states Application Complete No additional documents.   As a reminder, please ignore the submission status at the bottom.   Last year our application was in two parts and it is not possible for us to get rid of that message at this time.   It means nothing so ignore it. Communication Breakdown Deborah Tannen in her essay â€Å"Sex Lies and Conversation† points out the problems in communication between genders. She focuses on conversational styles and on how a person’s expectations of one’s reaction may cause misunderstanding. She emphasizes the importance of something she calls cross cultural communication. First, Tannen describes the differences in how children socialize. Most of what we know about communication we learned when we were children. When women are little girls, they have best friends, ones we can share our secrets with. When we get a little older and have a relationship with the opposite sex we expect the same kind of communication. Tannen believes the importance is not necessarily the topic but the feeling that you get from conversation and points out ,â€Å"What is important is not the individual subjects that are disclosed but the sense of closeness, of a life shared, that emerges when people tell their thoughts, feelings and impressions† (51). We must learn to socialize with the opposite sex the same way we do with the same sex. If we could learn to connect and have the â€Å"sense of closeness† with the opposite sex we might be able to communicate successfully. Tannen’s research has shown that men socialize differently as boys and â€Å"Since they don’t assume talk is the cement that binds the relationship, men don’t know what kind of talk women want, and they don’t miss it when it isn’t there†(51). Tannen points out that boys learn to communicate in larger groups, often struggling not to be in the subaltern position of the conversation. Men do not like to listen; they like to feel like they are the superior person in the conversation. (51) Communication starts in childhood and what we have learned to expect from conversations. Next, Tannen observes how men and women listen to each other and how this can cause misunderstanding between genders . She feels that there is confusion about what women expect and declares, â€Å"When women talk to each other in a close, comfortable setting, they often overlap, finish each other’s sentences and anticipate what the other is about to say† (53). Tannen also talks about listener noise. Women often will say â€Å"mhm† or â€Å"uhuh† and men do not do these things when they talk to each other. Women are looking for that â€Å"listener noise† and if he is silent, she thinks he is ignoring her but on the same token Tannen notes, â€Å"Men who expect silent attention interpret a stream of listener noise as overreaction or impatience† (53). Body language and conversational habits are causing women to feel like they are being ignored and men to feel as if they are being interrupted. When a woman is having a conversation they expect the listener to â€Å"express agreement† and be supportive of the conversation. Men, on the other hand, feel it is their conversational duty to express other positions in the argument. (53) Learning the importance of building a rapport with the person you are talking to may be another way to have successful conversation with the opposite sex. Finally, Tannen believes that learning how the opposite sex communicates is the key. If we can learn what to expect when communicating with someone then we can learn how to respond. Tannen suggests â€Å" A sociolinguistic approach by which male-female conversation is seen as cross- cultural communication allows us to understand the problem and forge solutions without blaming either party†(54). Tannen stresses the importance of telling the other person how you feel about their communication with you and advises,† Women who feel abandoned and deprived when their husbands won’t listen to or report daily news may be happy to discover their husbands trying to adapt once they understand the place of small talk in women’s relationships† (55). It is really not the male or females fault that we communicate the way we do but it is our fault if we do not speak up and tell them it bothers us. When we are in a relationship with another person we just have to adapt to the way they communicate to make the relationship work. If a woman learns to accept that her husband is not going to communicate with her like her best girlfriend did in her childhood then she can look for other people to hold those types of conversation with. (55) Learning to communicate with the opposite sex involves many different things. Communication is something that is learned in childhood but mostly with the same sex. In order to have a successful relationship with good communication we must understand that men and women have very different body language when communicating and that they do not respond the same. He is older than Amir and Hassan and tries to blame Amir for socializing with the Hazara people; i.e. Hassan, who, according to him, is from an inferior race and should only live in Hazarajat. In the book, he tries to confront and attack Amir with his brass knuckles, but Hassan plays a heroic role in defending Amir with his slingshot and threatens to shoot out Assef’s left eye. In the book, Hassan is a saint-like figure. Amir, on the other hand, is shown as a cowardice and jealousy-prone character. There are events when both these characters show pomp in their behaviors: Hassan defends Amir’s kite while he is being raped by Assef – as a means of revenge. When Amir witnessed Hassan getting raped by Assef, he doesn’t take any action. Due to his cowardice on that occasion, sheer jealousy and utter frustration due to Hassan’s saint-like behavior, and him getting more love from father than Amir the latter frames Hassan as a thief in order to get rid of him. Hassan falsely confesses – demonstrating again his saint-like characteristics. Amir is then seen to live a life of guilt within the shadows, haunted by such horrible events of the past. The main reason Rehan Khan called Amir was to convince him to go to Kabul and rescue Hassan’s only son, Sohrab, who was being kept in an orphanage. Amir is convinced by Rehan and goes to Kabul so he can rescue Sohrab from the Taliban. In Part III of the book, it is revealed that Sohrab wasn’t in an orphanage; however, he was held captive by Assef, Amir’s childhood nemesis. Sohrab was made to dance, dressed like a woman and his statement reveals that Assef might have been raping him. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini has one of the best, yet very childish endings, where Sohrab gets to fulfill his father’s wishes by shooting out Assef’s left eye with his slingshot. This event takes place when Sohrab, in his father’s image, saves Amir from Assef – when he cruelly beats Amir as a price for keeping him captive. Different Texts Speak Of A Friendship Between Two Or More...

Many different texts speak of a friendship between two or more heroes. Two such are the Bible and the Gilgamesh Epic. In 1 and 2 Samuel we find the story of Johnathan and David and the Epic presents the story of Gilgamesh and an Axe with the entual introduction of the character of Enkidu. In both of these texts friendship is taken to the level of sexual love. Although I do not believe you can interpret both in this manner. First, in Second Samuel David laments the death of Saul and Johnathan. He laments, â€Å"Saul and Johnathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions† (2 Sam 1:23). David is deeply distressed over the death of Johnathan especially; he says, â€Å"I am distressed for you, my brother Johnathan; greatly beloved were you to me; your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women† (2 Sam 1:26). The phrase â€Å"passing the love of women† elicits a feelin g that David loved Johnathan more than a wife. This has some large sexual overtones. While this could definitely not be meant literally I believe it should be at least interpreted metaphorically. In the Penn Tablet, we see Gilgamesh relaying a dream he had of an axe he relays, â€Å"An axe was lying there, and they were gathered over it† (Penn I 29-30).Gilgamesh then further says about the axe, â€Å"When I saw it, I rejoiced.
